past (10 or more sentences):
Bast was born and raised with horses. Her childhood was spent in the Virginian countryside on her family's stables. Her dad helped keep them afloat by working as a professor while her mom and brothers ran the stables. Horses were her life. Literally. She never went to school. Instead, she was home schooled by her mother and occasionally her father though must of her knowledge came from John and Jay. That wasn't really important to her though. What was more important was the horses.
Riding came easy to the young girl and was taught further, mainly by her brothers. Eventually, her talent became more recognized by her family. She was an excellent rider holding massive potential but they couldn't nurture it. So, her parents saved up some money, called in a few favors and got her a place in one of the bigger stables nearby. It was then that her true potential was unleashed.
A good teacher and specially bred horses made her true talent show. She was put in many races at a young age and, as she got older, she was able to get into more prestigious races. At the age of 19, Bast accomplished what she never expected to do. Win one of the Triple Crown races.
It was the Preakness Stakes to be exact. The stables that truly trained her put a big risk when they sent her in there on their finest thoroughbred. The risk was worth it though as she won the race and brought them glory and fame. After that she participated in a few smaller races (much to the owner's disappointment) then left to go back to her family.
Bast didn't want all the fame and instead wanted to try her family's specialty. Harness racing. The more muscled, heavier breed of the Standardbreds were a perfect start for her to train the horses she was to ride. With the help of her brother, she trained a colt by the name Nutty Bay. The bay colt lived up to his name, he was as nutty as a horse could get. Not exactly the perfect horse for a first time trainer but, with quite a bit of help, she prevailed.
All the hard work was paid off (not literally) when Bast entered her stallion in their first harness race. The underdogs won the race and only continued to do so. Of course they had a few losses but that didn't stop 'em! Nutty and Bast made a good team and the jockey had genuine affection for her horse but her bay's sensitivity was affecting him. Nutty was getting slower, his injuries healing slower while his stress levels were getting higher. So, Bast did something she didn't want to. She gave her beloved horse an early retirement and went back to the world of flat racing.
It didn't last long however. A few races one here and there but it was quickly over. A simple injury, a horrible yet simple fall left her badly injured and temporarily crippled for a few months. Those few months felt like forever and it took long, long hours of physical therapy until she could walk on her own again. Bast's only comfort during those days was Nutty. She would be pulled by her precious horse in a small buggy. It wasn't the same but it kept her spirits up.
As soon as she fully recovered, Bast retired from the jockey business and focused her efforts on the stables but she needed a change of scenery. Somewhere to start anew. An old acquaintance informed her that an Equestrian Academy needed a caretaker for their stable and would be willing to put in good word for her. So, she applied, was accepted then moved with Nutty and has been working the academy's stables ever since.
